Depression Therapy
What is Depression?
Depression is much more severe than “feeling down” every once in a while. It is characterized by an overwhelming and constant feeling of sadness, along with a loss of interest in day-to-day activities. Depression can have a situational cause, such as the loss or illness of a loved one, a recent move, or other significant change. In other cases, depression can be caused by a neurotransmitter deficiency.
Depression can be variable through different seasons of life; meaning patients can have a variation of intensity and duration of depressive symptoms.
Depression Symptoms
People diagnosed with depression may experience some of these common symptoms:
- constant feelings of sadness or hopelessness
- loss of interest in activities
- irritability
- social isolation from friends or family
- inability to care for his or her own needs, such as eating or bathing
- insomnia or sleeping too much
- fatigue
- lack of appetite or overeating
- suicidal ideation
- self-harm
- other physical symptoms, like headaches or back pain
If left untreated, depression can lead to the loss of relationships, the loss of a job or home, conflict among family members, etc. Depression puts an emotional toll on not only the patient, but also his or her loved ones. This disorder can affect a person’s overall well-being in such a way that it could become life-threatening.
