Individual Therapy

About

Many people wonder how therapy differs from psychiatry, and others may not even know that they’re different. Where psychiatry mainly focuses on medical and biological dysfunctions, therapy looks into the emotional causes or dysfunctions behind behaviors and symptoms.

Individual therapy sessions are generally an hour long and it’s not unusual for patients to come in weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, depending on what’s needed. Therapy is effective for short to long term intervention, and is generally recommended for anyone 16 and over.

At Bett’s Psychiatric, our relationship to our clients is the most important aspect of the therapy process. Trust is what encourages our patients to disclose information to us that we can use to help them. We value our clients’ ability to be honest and open with us, and in return, we help them achieve a happier and healthier well-being.

Process

Typical to any other provider’s office, the first thing we need from our patients is important information about who they are and what they think they need in regard to therapy. To make this process easier, we have provided all of our initial paperwork online. Click here to fill out and submit your information at your convenience.

The next step is your first appointment. The patient-therapist relationship is of the utmost importance, which is why it’s essential that the patient feel at ease with their chosen therapist. Another thing to consider on the patient’s part is the specialties of the therapist. One size doesn’t fit all, so establishing whether or not the relationship seems to fit is important.

As mentioned above, the amount of sessions per week or month will be determined by the patient’s situation and the therapist’s judgement. Regular appointments will likely be needed at first, and can fluctuate based on the patient’s progress.

Benefits

Individual therapy can allow a patient to experience a space they may have never experienced before. When a patient talks one-on-one to a therapist, they will build a trusting relationship with each other. What makes this different than confiding in a friend of family member, is that a therapist knows only as much as the patient discloses. There are no preconceptions or emotional ties from a therapist that a friend or family member may have. That’s just one of the many reasons that make individual therapy such a successful tool.

When a patient and therapist have a strong relationship, healing and problem solving are more likely to work. At Bett’s Psychiatric, our end goal is to always help our patients take steps in the right direction for their own mental health and personal growth.
